Excavators and bulldozers (track-type tractors) are complementary, not substitutes. Big projects need both. Small projects need to pick one.
Bulldozer wins when
- Pushing material over short distances (under 100m)
- Final grading and levelling
- Stripping topsoil over large areas
- Ripping (with rear ripper attachment)
- Site clearance and road formation
Excavator wins when
- Digging (depth and volume)
- Loading trucks (haul cycle)
- Lifting and placing materials
- Trenching
- Reach work over obstacles
Productivity rule of thumb
For sustained earthmoving, an excavator + ADT combination typically beats a bulldozer push for material movement beyond 80-100m. Below 100m, bulldozer push wins on fuel and cycle time.
