Importing an excavator into an African market involves coordination between supplier, clearing agent, customs authority, and final-mile transport. Most first-time buyers underestimate the documentation and timing.
The 9-step process
- Order placement — sign contract, pay deposit (typically 20-30%)
- Pre-export inspection — our 47-point checklist (3-5 days)
- Documentation prep — commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin
- Pre-shipment inspection (some countries require COC/SONCAP)
- Ocean freight — 3-6 weeks for African destinations
- Customs entry — clearing agent files entry, duty/VAT assessment
- Duty payment + release — pay assessment, obtain release order
- Port pickup — flatbed pickup, low-loader permits where needed
- Final delivery + commissioning — site delivery, operator handover, 50-hour service
Pre-shipment inspection certificates (PSI / COC)
Several African countries require Conformity Assessment Certificates (COC) for imported heavy equipment. Examples: Nigeria (SONCAP), Kenya (PVOC), Tanzania (PVOC), Côte d'Ivoire (Veritas). Process takes 5-15 days; we coordinate this with the buyer's clearing agent.
